Garage Door Won't Open? 7 Things to Check Before You Call a Pro

Published November 12, 2025

Quick Troubleshooting Before Calling for Help

Your garage door won't open. Your car is trapped. Before you panic, try these 7 checks.

1. Check the Remote Batteries

Dead batteries are the most common reason. If the wall button works but remote doesn't, replace batteries.

2. Look at the Safety Sensors

Photo-eye sensors must be aligned and unobstructed. Clean both sensors and check indicator lights.

3. Check if the Door is Locked

Manual lock mechanism accidentally engaged? The opener will strain but the door won't move.

4. Look at the Emergency Release

If someone pulled the red cord during a power outage, the opener won't move the door. Re-engage it.

5. Check for Power Issues

Is the opener plugged in? Breaker tripped? Power surges during storms are common.

6. Listen to the Motor

Motor hums but door doesn't move = stripped drive gear. Clicking = circuit board failure. Both need a pro.

7. Look at the Springs

Visible gap in torsion spring = broken. Do NOT open manually. Call a professional.
