Why Your Garage Door Is Making Noise (And How to Fix It)

Published March 28, 2026

Every Noise Has a Cause

A noisy garage door is telling you something needs attention. Ignoring it leads to expensive repairs later.

Squeaking

Cause: Dry hinges, rollers, or springs. Fix: Silicone-based lubricant on all moving parts.

Grinding

Cause: Worn rollers, stripped opener gear, misaligned tracks. Fix: Inspect rollers for flat spots. Stripped gear costs $100–$200 to fix.

Rattling

Cause: Loose nuts, bolts, brackets. Fix: Tighten all visible hardware with socket wrench. Don't over-tighten.

Popping

Cause: Springs adjusting under load or near failure. Fix: If getting worse, have springs inspected. Loud snap = spring broken.

Banging at Bottom

Cause: Opener close-force too aggressive. Fix: Adjust down-force and travel-limit settings.

Slapping

Cause: Loose chain on chain-drive opener. Fix: Tighten chain to about 1/2 inch of play.
